Gorgeous Glengarriff If you can find a prettier holiday cottage than this, please let us know. Some of us will have a hat to eat.

The former hunting lodge of the earls of Bantry, it stands on a two-acre island of lawns and gardens amid the ancient oaks of Glengarriff Woods.

Luxury Self Catering West Cork

If you’re looking for a unique luxury break in West Cork – Glengarriff Lodge is the place for you.

Self Catering Luxury

The lodge is set on an amazing private 50 acre woodland estate in the ancient oak woodlands of Glengarriff. Originally it was built as a hunting lodge and showpiece for the Earl of Bantry. The Earl chose the site carefully and then diverted the Glengarriff River to created a 2 acre island for the lodge.

Recently refurbished to a luxury standard by the current owners, the Lodge has 4 bedrooms and can accommodate 8 adults with ease. There’s plenty of living space, with a large open plan kitchen / dining area, a separate sitting room with open fire and a spacious conservatory overlooking the river. The Lodge is a beautiful blend of luxurious comfort and the historic. Literary luminaries such as Wordsworth and Thackery were guests of the Earl.

Garnish Island Glengarriff

Garnish Island (also confusingly called Ilnacullin Island) is nestled in Glengarriff harbour in the famous Bantry Bay. Garnish Island benefits from the gulf stream is an amazing garden. The gardens are spectacular and the highlight is the Italian Garden. It is the ideal venue for a day out with a picnic, with walks, gardens, a cafe and even a Martello tower looking out over the bay.

Garnish

The island is accessed by a short ferry ride and there are three ferries in operation – One from the Blue Pool , The Ferry from the Glengarriff Pier and a small intimate ferry from Shrone pier. The cost of the trip is between €8 and €12 which doesn’t include the entry ticket to the Island (althought this is an annoyance – I would highly reccommend this as one of the best trips in West Cork).

There’s a very tame seal colony in the harbour and each ferry will stop and allow you to see the seals – when the pups are learning to fend for themselves is probably the most interesting time of the year.

Glengarriff Woods

Glengarriff Lodge is adjacent to the spectacular Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve. The woods are nestled in the shelter of the glen, between the Caha mountains and the beautiful harbour of Glengarriff. The Nature Reserve is approximately 300 Ha and is comprised of mixed woodlands. The dominant habitat is old oak woodland and the woods form one of the best examples of oceanic sessile oak woodland in Ireland, being rated second only in importance to the Killarney oakwoods.

Oak

In other areas of the wood young woodland has been planted to regenerate areas which have been cleared of non-native conifers over the last few years. The Nature Reserve is part of the much larger Glengarriff Harbour & Woodlands Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

At one time the woods were part of Lord Bantry’s estate, but they were handed over to the State in 1955 for forestry purposes. However in 1991, the woods were designated as a Nature Reserve and the woodland is now owned and managed by National Parks and Wildlife Service primarily for conservation and amenity purposes.
